“I Can’t Do It!”

How often don’t we limit ourselves by those four words?  The child who becomes exasperated because of an especially hard assignment.  The teenager who is becoming frustrated in his efforts to make the football team.  The adult who is frantically trying to run in five different directions at the same time as she seeks to provide for her family.  “I can’t do it! I just can’t do it!”

Perhaps you’ve uttered those words lately.  The truth of the matter is that there are some things in life that we can’t do.  Time runs out.  We get tired.  We may not have the ability to do them. But the good news is that we don’t have to “do life” on our own.  In the Old Testament, God once spoke to Joshua and made him this promise, Joshua 1:5,6 “I will be with you.  I will not fail you nor forsake you.  Be strong and very courageous.”  What God said to Joshua, he also says to us today.  We don’t have to carry our burdens alone.  When we put our trust and confidence in God and His Word, He promises us that He will carry both us and our burdens.  God proved His trustworthiness to carry our burdens by bearing the greatest burden of all.  He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to Calvary ’s cross.  When He triumphantly cried out from the cross, “it is finished!”, he was assuring us that the burden of sin has been removed.  Jesus “did it” for us.

What exactly does that mean for us?  The apostle Paul tells us in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through (Christ) who strengthens me”.  Those things in life that God wants us to do, to accomplish, He makes a way for us.  He gives us the strength through Jesus Christ.

When you’re tempted to throw up your hands and utter those familiar words, “I can’t do it”, remind yourself that God is in charge.  If it is His will, there is no power on earth that can prevent it.  Trust in God.  That’s the remedy for the word “can’t”.

God's Blessings,

Pastor Raymond Kimbrough
